Technically, pre-movie trailers are the new thing. Back in the day promos for new movies came after the movie, or trailed the movie. That's why they're called trailers. Execs figured out later that people didn't stay after the movie, so they moved them to before the movie.

Post credit trailers were always a thing that is why they are called 'trailers'.
