We can’t bring ourselves to believe that moments like this represent anything more than a moral victory; demonstrations of hypocrisy only affect those inclined to shame.
My feeling was, you are giving this man way more power than he deserves by behaving in this way. It made Milo look sexier and edgier than he deserved to look.
But deplatforming JK Rowling doesn’t show anyone that she’s wrong—the only thing it proves is that there is a group of people large enough and loud enough and threatening enough to demand that she be silenced.
If a speaker is invited to a public university, their speech is protected by the First Amendment. To deplatform them—no matter *who* they are—is censorship.
Color me motherfucking shocked, The AV Club comes out in favor of censorship. Kind of, what are the words I’m looking for, flies in the face of the anti-authoritarianism the club professes.
You can go from the lion taming exhibition to the ‘How long can you hide a watch up your ass?’ challenge!
Yeah... this line in particular was really frustrating to see:
Simple question: was this game ever going to “fail” in any meaningful way?
Heck, I recall there was an article on kinja (prolly here on kotaku) blasting a critic on a different site that dared to review the game, and how that person should never call themselves a “ally” after doing their job.
‘cept tinyhipsterboy seems to imply the things they listed are the only things that happened, and thus not bullying.
Agreed, and many commenters here are trying to hide or downplay it too.
“playing the wizard game doesn’t make you a transphobe”
Good!
Downplaying and deflecting the treatment (harassment, doxxing of friends and families, death threats, etc.) the streamers got as “Criticism” is just downright sad to see.
“Because Pikamee’s Hogwarts Legacy tweets have been deleted, it’s hard to get a holistic view of how strongly people actually opposed her stream, though evidence suggests the criticism was clear in its disappointment but did not seem to escalate to harassment”
Why do you lie so blatantly? I know Sisi is... special but…
I don’t at all disagree with the idea of boycotting the game or whatever other wizard merch so as not to line Rowling’s pockets any further. But I do feel like allies attacking people over playing is probably having more of a negative effect in regards to furthering the cause than anything.
amazing how many have latched onto this idea that buying and playing a game might give a couple dollars to a hateful biggot, but this has never applied to any other game where hateful biggots have been the face of them. I’m sure this website will run yet another article heaping unedning praise on the fake Lego game…
I feel like they’re setting up Scott’s daughter to be the next Wasp. Especially since they recast her from the actress that was in Endgame.
