i showed this to my son (age 8) and he thinks it’s hilarious that people think you should force people to drink tea. Like, who would think like that? It makes no sense.

This American isn’t horrified by it. It’s a shame we have to police peoples behavior like this, but as you said it greatly increases the quality of life for the people who would be affected by that kind of hateful behavior and we should prioritize people’s safety over some assholes “right” to harass and threaten…
Did you even read the article? Classifying misogyny as a hate crime doesn’t change the crime — as the article says, there are already laws against harrassment and unwanted touching. What it does is allow police to offer more support to victims.
I was aware, and I am in the U.S.
I don’t think they are villains at all! Being bothered by something doesn’t mean that I think they are evil. They are devastated. But so were Amanda and her family. They did not lose as much as Meredith’s parents, but their pain and loss are real. And to have your murdered friend’s parents think you are responsible in…
The United States executed a child less than 80 years ago and people act like the US justice system was fantastic until Serial and Making a Murderer told them otherwise. Give me a break. The Amanda Knox case was only shocking because the folks who were shocked couldn’t conceive of someone like *them* being treated…
Thanks for the clarification. If true, they were wrong to tell people to go back inside I suppose, but there is no proven way to predict exactly when a massive earthquake will strike. I guess they should’ve just shrugged and said, “Non lo sappiamo!”
I think she’s innocent, but she wouldn’t have gotten half the coverage if places like Jezebel didn’t relate to this woman. “Oh, she’s white and upper middle class, she reminds me so much of myself when I was her age.” Bleh.
I don’t think Knox is guilty but I have a lot of sympathy for Kercher’s parents. I think it is very typical in cases like these to just latch on to whoever the police are telling you is the culprit and then have so much anger toward that person that you can’t let go of it despite any evidence to the contrary. I can’t…
Upthread, I saw a comment about how everyone thinks that the news should be “balanced” these days. As a result, for every expert who is interviewed about climate change or vaccines, they invite up a blogger who denies the science and facts about those things. Then they can claim that they are being “fair” about the…
They’re called refugees. Venezuela, Honduras, and El Salvador have the highest murder rates in the world. We’ve sent people back to their deaths by denying their asylum. Not figuratively, as in we put them in danger, literally, as in they died after we sent them back.
No to this entire comment
Also quick question for Americans I know that in UK many schools are now teaching consent to students as young as 10. At schools in US what age do students start learning about consent?
I’m not being snarky: I think there is no teaching of consent. Maybe in a handful of independent schools.
To answer your question: they dont. (At least where I live)
10th grade I think, so 15-16ish.
Um.... they don’t? They definitely did not when I was in high school in the early 2000s, and even though they have changed a lot of things for the better, as far as I know, this is extremely necessary, and brand new if it exists at all.
Congrats to them on escaping the conflict and the camps, although what they’re walking into... I don’t know. It’s better, I suppose, but it’s still a scary climate, in the USA. Granted, we also have our xenophobes in Canada. The thing is, we have less of them overall, and more breathing room. Plus we’re secure with a…
I’ve just moved to the US from the UK and had to try and figure out how to watch the Olympics on NBC. Have to say, the coverage from the BBC is far superior (and I know I’m biased, but it’s true). Far easier to watch live events, get serious and honest analysis from experts - and there’s no mental time delay.
Amazing, he also had immigrant friendly Nigel Farage with him.
