i think they thought offering cheaper seats would appeal to people that go to matinees bc its cheaper. i guess they thought there would be a huge untapped market of people that dont go to the movies opening night because theyd rather wait to watch it before 4pm on a tuesday to save a couple bucks.

the studios are for the most part all controlled by corporations. its fairly easy to create an independent studio; its much more difficult to compete in any meaningful way. amazon and apple were able to enter the industry because they were already very very large.
