Bunnies are not good for small kids (once the lil-bunnies become adults they chew a lot and are very messy and high-maintenance). if he is good with turtles, you could get him a gecko or lizard instead? Kind of keeps with the theme.

Please don't get a rabbit for a child so young, the House Rabbit Society has an excellent website and lots of information about pet rabbit care, which is very labor intensive. Ten or twelve is barely old enough even to handle a rabbit at all.
