There’s an “Aa” button on the top right with formatting controls for all sorts of stuff. Also, it looks like the normal keyboard shortcuts work too.

It sounds like on their other sites, the goals for comments have been to keep trolls away and keep discussion strictly on-topic for the article. Hence the heavy-handed “greys” functionality and the lack of threading (because then people will have discussions, and we don’t want that).

I think Ernie said in the Q&A thread that they'd migrate all the old comments, then switch to the new site, then there'd be some weirdness as they copied any comments that got posted in the meantime.
