Well, I think like a lot with this show, it's left up to the viewer's interpretation. I think the God/destiny explanation is as close to a real answer as you're likely to get though.

That's basically my perception as well. I mean what other shows could get away with that kind of production schedule unless the network really appreciated them?

While it's certainly far from my favorite episode, I don't think I hated it as much as most. Probably because i was always interested in what life for the civilian survivors was like and unfortunately this was one of the few episode where you're given that window.
