Maybe so, but having the little kids there looking all clueless changed the way the joke landed. And bringing them out as “accountants”? Gross.

I did mention it on another thread on this post. My bad for forgetting to do that here!
Again, as I said, it’s more regional than it is about religion. Women in Latin America, Africa who are Christian get punished for not being virgins. Killed sometimes even. Papua New Guinea has become mostly Christian because of evangelical activism, and they lynch women for being witches. Hindu women in India and some…
Also. Inarritu literally talked about diversity in his speech. He said this is a great opportunity to “liberate ourselves from all prejudice” to make sure the “color of our skin becomes as irrelevant as the length of our hair.”
He brought out Asian kids and made them stand there cluelessly while he made those jokes. That’s just shitty. Two kinds of racism don’t cancel each other out - I mean, those kids weren’t the Asians demonstrating for that ass.
God they were all laughing...with like absolute GLEE. It was painful to watch.
I think people forget that racism from two sides don’t cancel each other out. I marched in both the Asians 4 Black Lives and Latinx For Black Lives Matter last week and people were really coming out in solidarity.
Yep, and some people on twitter got mad that Asian Americans were mad and then called them anti-black. It was a whole mess lol. Not a good week for PoC solidarity, with the Peter Liang shitshow and now this.
I know but combined with that gross Rihanna thing and his comments on Jada...it just didn’t sit well with me.
Yeah, I mean...he insulted Jada more than he did any white folks voting for the Academy. The amount of laughter his jokes were prompting among all the white people was painful tbh. They were laughing at us, not with us.
They brought out “accountants” i.e two asian kids and a jewish kid and there was a joke about the Asians being good at math, and then one about child labour in Asian countries. Then Sacha Baron Cohen came on and made a Asians have Small Penises joke. Those were literally the only two times Asians were even mentioned.
It honestly felt like he was making fun of people caring so much about the #OscarsSoWhite thing. I mean, technically, black folks complained about this even in the 60's. You can care about lynchings and then you can care about some other things as well.
Well to be fair, they’re hardly limited to Muslim communities. I’m pretty sure it happens in Hindu, and even Buddhist communities. Many christians (newly converted, poor, with only a crude and literal knowledge of the Bible) in the third world often target women in this way as well.
No, I understood what he saying. I know ~intellectually~ that he was taking shots at the right people. The nominees work really hard and rarely get a decent portion of the earnings they deserve. I just felt uncomfortable that the people in the audience laughing were rich ass producers and directors and actors. Louis…
Seriously. This whole OscarsSoWhite thing has become so exhausting. First of all, they played her off insanely rudely before she could even speak properly about the honor killings.
I got what he was trying to do but by the end it was just...a little demeaning in a way?
They are conditioned, like many many men in many different ways, in the east and in the west, to see women as less than fully human. They cannot accept women and gender in all its complexities. They are scared of it, so they do what they can in their power to silence us and limit us. Simple as that. It’s how systems…
You don’t really understand the concept of a sample, do ya?
Yeah, it was a bit too chaotic. Gaga is clearly a good performer, I mean, I’ve seen the Sound of Music tribute. But that night, fewer songs would’ve been a better choice.
I loved the robotic keyboard thing at Gaga’s performance...but it kind of lacked a depth? Tributes are first of all very hit or miss, and he might’ve felt that it was just way too theatrical. I always prefer it when artists just do one song properly instead of a medley of songs.
