We opted for geothermal when we built our house 4 years ago. best investment ever. our house is a modest 3,000sq ft and it costs us about $100/month year round for heating, cooling and electricity combined. It even heats our water. Hell, with two small kids, our water bill is about as much as our combined energy bill.

true that! i am lucky to live in the midwest where housing in my area is about $100/sq ft finished. We have plenty of house and yard for our family of 4, and even with property taxes we are still under $2k/month for mortgage. child care on the other hand....

Considering after taxes you are looking at about $3k (roughly estimated) and child care for two kids runs about $1600/month then yeah, it would be difficult to support a family on that.

If there are ever any hiccups, its internal (uploading to Youtube while trying to stream two apple tv's and multiple wifi devices).
