No, I know how they usually handle overbooking. I'm just unconvinced that routinely overbooking is as financially necessary to keep the industry afloat as claimed.

I'm a little confused by the argument (which I have seen people make, even people criticizing United) that airlines HAVE to overbook because some people don't show up for their flights, and the margins are tight enough that they need to have every seat on the plane sold to make a profit.
