Looking at tournament results across the formats for the past few weeks, most have pretty healthy metagames. Standard is getting locked into a few archetypes, but that gets shaken up every few months anyway.
Yeah. It's legal in Legacy, and has been smashing face over the past few weekends. Legacy has some pretty bonkers stuff anyway, though.
WotC actually produces pre-built 30 card decks specifically for teaching new players, that they provide to gaming shops at no extra cost to give away, and to play with to get new players into the game. They're terrific.
I actually picked up all of the 2013 decks from my local game shop at MSRP, although they've since raised the prices a bit, and extra copies from Targets and Walmarts around the area.
There are a lot of good lists out there for building cubes, too, so it isn't too hard, especially if you go for the C(ommon)/U(ncommon)bes, or something thematic like the Zombie Cube. And, if you have a cube, none of the other players needs to have anything, so it's almost board-game like.
D14 is nice because it's finally available on tablets, so playing on an Android or iPad is convenient. It's also a great way to learn a lot of the basics.
Some of the rules changes over the years have led to people legitimately being angry about the game, and not just 'moved on to other things'. The latest set, based on Greek mythology, is incredibly flavorful. Rescue from the Underworld is pretty much "Orpheus and Eurydice" on one card.
I started drinking George Dickel because a character in a book used it as a bar name, so when I was old enough to drink I tried it and thought it was okay, especially for the price.
