Not to mention, IP banning can block non trolls if people are posting from shared computers.

I read Jezebel + Gawker almost daily, and I had no idea this was going on - so 1) you guys are obviously doing a good job of timely, aggressive purging, and 2) I am so grateful for that.

At pretty much every blogging job I've ever had, I've been told (by male managers) that it'd be a death sentence to moderate comments and block IP addresses, because it "shuts down discourse" and guts traffic. But no one's ever shown me any actual numbers that support that claim. Does anyone have any? Not that I think

I'll be frank: I've been doing a lot of the behind the scenes complaining about this from my end because that's the only thing I can do. As some of you might know, I started out as a mod and worked my way up. I've seen a lot of shit, even with the old system in place (and not just from one site - I modded all the

This is why all gifs should not be banned.

What on earth are you talking about? Offering to help is now a 'white savior complex?'

yes because only white people are activists.

Because if it isn't gifs, it's stills. If it isn't images, its text. The gifs are a symptom of the problem — that there are no protections or tools in place to handle trolls, who are attracted to women's websites.

Good on you guys for having the courage to use this avenue.

I think banning gifs is the wrong precedent to set and allows Gawker to ignore the problem instead of doing what it takes to stop it.

Oh yeah, the star system was awesome. It was also a semi-deterrent, because pink commenters knew that it was pretty much impossible for them to have their shit seen.

You could also possibly deputize commenters with banning power if they've proven they could handle the power without abusing it (re: not me). More cops roaming the streets.

We used to have a waiting period - the 'try-outs' for comments and it took sometimes a week or two to become approved. I'm starting to really miss that.

Idiot? Why the name calling? You can correct someone without needing to use hateful words.

There are possible solutions/mitigation methods for this issue - putting a waiting period on created burner accounts before they can post images, limiting the number of images that can be posted on a burner account within a certain period of their creation, etc. - but I doubt Denton is willing to do anything that

Wow, thank you guys so much for writing this. To be honest, the mods have been dealing with this on and off for years. It's never been as bad as this. But back when we had main page abilities, we were able to remove the content alongside authors and tech. It helped protect our readers, our writers, everyone. It's

How can we support you? What can readers/commenters do to push Gawker Media into action?

The last thing I want to do is give this giant and troubling waste of our goddamn time the acknowledgment that is clearly so desperately craved. But the fact that I must suppress my pride and bring attention to this in a plea for support from my own employer makes it all the more ridiculous.

I hear you, and I'm so sorry about your grandpa. How does pouring ice water on your head help the cause? Make an online donation of even $5, you self-centered wankers.

What a bunch of bullshit. I really start squirming when I see people doing things just for the sake of awareness, but this is especially ridiculous. If you're going to do something "for awareness" at least spend a little time highlighting how people can contribute to research or help those with the disease. It could
