It's like they were trying to siphon some of the geopolitical intrigue from Homeland, but backed off so far from it after the pilot that it became pointless.  I just don't think you can do that kind of story while you're worrying about being inoffensive to everyone.

I'm guessing any sort of apocalypse horror is probably out along with vampires.  They haven't really done proper occultism yet… or psychic teens… and medical horror is by no means exhausted.
