Cute emails, but I was bleeding into my underwear and not giving a shit about it way before THINX was a gleam in Agrawal’s eye.

Agreed.
A sick child like this is an enormous stressor for the most stable and secure of marriages. However, I’m sick to death of reading about entire families being wiped out by a man (presumably) who was under stress and/or abusive. A girl I grew up was murdered by her husband last year. He was apparently abusive for years.…
“Shrill” means “Spoken by a woman who is daring to challenge a man”
As a disabled person myself, I wish like hell that those “poor overwhelmed caregiver” stories moved non-disabled people to think, “Hmm, maybe we should actually significantly improve access to good, supportive, accessible social services and healthcare so that caregivers to people with severe disabilities don’t get…
Yes, as a PWD, I’m feeling kind of cynical about the reactions to this. I guess this incident helps define the limits of what crimes against the disabled are deemed acceptable by the abled and which aren’t. Mass knifings = bad, but “poor overwhelmed parent” of disabled child killing said child = lots of sympathy for…
The Harlem Hellfighters of WWI.
I think it’s helpful to consider dwarfism an example of being differently abled because people with dwarfism may need certain accommodations, and they should have the protection of the ADA.
I was just logging in to say this! Marcus York is my relative and he has been on CSI:NY, The Office, 8 Simple Rules etc. It sucks that when I try to think of roles played by people who have a disability all I can think of is him and Marlee Matlin. This needs to change!
no, it’s really not that simple, sorry. It would also be cheaper to hire unknowns and people don’t do that. Or not pay for super expensive CGI, prosthetics, etc to disguise people as disabled. It’s more about deep-seated stereotypes - including the idea that it’s amazing acting to pretend to be disabled, thus the idea…
It was as offensive as fuck though when his character did dance. Just. wtf.
Elle Woods knows nothing.
She means that fear is not an excuse for cops and vigilantes to kill Black people.
This is a wonderful piece, and you sound like a great brother. But — as someone who understands the power of certain words, and how they’re used, you should get this — I wish you hadn’t used the phrase “confined to a wheelchair” multiple times. My wheelchair doesn’t have straps or locks that keep me from moving;…
Also unacceptable: spaz. It derives from spastic, which is a valid medical term referring to muscle tone, but was often used interchangeably with cerebral palsy, eg Sean’s a spastic would mean Sean has cerebral palsy.
The thing is, a lot of employers don’t want to hire disabled people, period. And the problem with that isn’t “disabled people are broken and not normal” but rather “a lot of employers are discriminatory jackasses.” I’m sure my disabilities do regularly color others’ views of me and make them think I’m less capable…
I’m sorry, but no. I have PTSD. It is definitely a disability. Calling it a disability (and thereby ensuring that I have a legal right to reasonable accommodations under the ADA) is very definitely not what is debilitating. Having panic attacks that make me feel like I’m going to die is debilitating. Waking up at…
Go fuck yourself.
My concern with that is a lot of students don’t have access to the health care needed to document mental illness and disabilities. It’s also rather a lot to ask a 19 year old who perhaps doesn’t want to disclose trauma to their parents or others to know how to navigate the system of getting accommodations.
