I very much agree with everything you've all said here and would like to add: I feel like this Seymour contradiction is lightly addressed at the end of Roof Beam when Buddy recounts the story of Seymour throwing a rock at their childhood friend for no real reason. I got a lot of reading done while on vacation in Vienna, ending up going on a pretty big Salinger kick and read Nine Stories, Raise High the Roof Beam Carpenters and re-read Franny and Zooey. All were excellent.
