I find this topic to be so interesting. When I bought a condo a few years ago I got a 15 year mortgage and, doing the math, realized that I could afford to pay it off in 7 years if I really tried. But the more I looked into it the more I realized that probably isn’t the smartest financial move (at least for me).

Interesting there’s no mention of interest rates in here. The decision to pay off debt quickly vs. slowly is hugely dependent on how expensive that debt is. If you are paying 2% on a car loan and can earn 4% on low-risk investments, you’re better off investing that cash and paying down the loan over time.

In the past whenever I came across a financial windfall, I would use the entire amount to immediately pay down credit card debt. The problem with this is that it left me with little or no cash in case of emergencies.
