Thank you for doing this article. And thank you Jezebel for finally getting this type of article.

Yes, during pregnancy cells from your unborn fetus can cross over into your bloodstream and depending on the cell type some of them are quite long lived. Great NPR story on it here http://www.npr.org/templates/stor…

"She also apologizes for using a sensationalized headline to get you to read this article."

Hahaha, I love you. If only the rest of the Jezebel writers (hell, the rest of journalists in general) would follow this example.

I am actually teaching a class on this very issue this semester. My first example is the whole "smelling farts can make you live longer" news extraganva. I don't know if you have the audience for it but something like anti-viral but with the weeks top science headlines could be really fun. Here is what the news

I know, I was like, "Wait, Jez finally got a science writer?!"

I had the same reaction—I had to double-check where I was reading—a clear article that was actually debunking bad pop science. Between that and the thoughtful review of Lena Dunham's book on Gawker by the new features editor things are feeling oddly grown-up around here.

Do mammograms next!! Do mammograms next!!

But the point of this isn't about the genetic donor, or even the genes of the baby. But that the pheonotypic expression can be governed by forces outside your diploid geneotype!

THANK YOU. This stuff pisses me off to no end. We're already basically illiterate when it comes so science in America and then we compound that by having the most absurd conclusions drawn from studies by journalists.

Honestly, it's a medical miracle I didn't go blind.

But the article said the cancer treatment worked on those mice! I want it!

dont apologize, I just wanted you to know I share your love of the comic! It's where I got the term media science cycle (always cite your sources and all that jazz).

Hell yes!!! Finally Jez has someone on the rolls who sciences. Welcome, Caroline!

Other things you are not, a mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, pig, beagle, E. coli, baker's yeast, zebra fish, C. elegans, Henrietta Lacks, and aborted Danish fetus from the 1970s...

I REALLY REALLY REALLY fucking hate it when the fucking media completely fucks with research findings. It's not just annoying, it's fucking dangerous. I can't count how many times these articles has twisted science to support sexism or racism. This kind of fear mongering also leads to the mistrust of science and

That comic is one of my favorites — I even linked to it in this article!

But if I don't use misleading headlines to play on my readers' emotions, how will I get advertising revenue?

YAY!!! A real, honest-to-God Science writer! Jezebel, you have answered our collective prayers!!!
