I’m very lucky that I have the job I have because I developed a fan/creator relationship with my now boss over social media and played it cool. I have seen so many others not handle it correctly and get blacklisted forever. It’s a tricky line to walk.

Listen I agree, I think the “bootstraps” bullshit is awful and insipid and it’s totally possible to have a less-than-priviledged upbringing and stay humble. But I can see how this kid in particular went “Fuck that, I’m going to have lots of money and if other people are mad they can just do what I did”

I think he doesn’t have empathy for the poor. He is a true “bootstraps” story and the ~*aMeRiCaN dReAm*~ come to life. I think he thinks that other poor people should just do what he did. And he believes that because it’s what was fed to him and his family.

Honestly they have made me empathetic to him. He’s a first gen American who failed out of his gifted kid high school and landed on a Wall Street work-study program that made him switch from hiding the fact that he didn’t have money for lunch to buying his friends’ xboxes and watches.

A guy I know peripherally but am FB friends with was high school best friends and bandmates with Martin. His FB posts have been pretty great these last few months.
