You are absolutely wrong about their not being intolerant. Buddhist Monks in both Sri Lanka and Myanmar/Burma have participated in atrocities against Muslims/Hindus. In Sri Lanka, the sides might be more equal but in Myanmar/Burma, the Muslims are absolutely defenceless.

Or maybe we can keep it as is to show that life is complex, and sometimes really, really talentd people can do awful, unspeakable things.

Whoopi Goldberg I believe.

Thank you!

Thank you for this! Sometimes I wonder if I might have aged out of Jezebel.... :)

Let me take one small example: the current president (whom, by the way, I love). There have been so many African-Americans before him vying for the position. But Barack Obama did not come from the same trajectory; and thus did not arouse the same unresolved issues as another might do.

Can you explain to the rest of us?

Right. Me, too. I am part North African but not African-American; as my people never went through the trajectory that African-Americans have here. I have explained as far as I can; Americans more easily accept an exotic other of colour than they do those who are from here, as they do not have to wrestle with the

How to get this to the top? You have it perfectly.

Seriously. Deport him back to Michigan. This makes me so mad.

Added to this: can you see ANYONE but Rihanna wearing this dress, and looking spectacular? No. No. She’s the only one. Because she is queen.

I am definitely not saying that they have not. I am only speaking of this country’s viewpoint. And, by the way, as someone who is part Berber myself, there is racism in North Africa; but it was not institutionalised in the way it has been here; and that makes a difference.

I could have been clearer, sorry. We do not have to deal with our own painful racial history with the exotic ‘other’; that is: slavery, segregation, and our own entrenched national view of race and racism.

Issues of our own history of race: slavery, segregation, racism etc.

Obligatory.

Yeah; I don’t mean to complain, either, but I sort of thought: as long as they’re ‘exotic’, the American public will be fine. Because we do not have to confront issues of race with Egyptian-Moroccans and Dominicans. That which I am waiting for is the day there are three African-American women gracing one cover.

Moi, aussi! So HAPPY! My splurge. A distressed white denim vest that is too small to close but worn over black looks funky and fashionable. So happy.

But people in Latin America can become very offended by this, truly.

I think I am in love with your kitteh.

I love that. Thank you.
