Another factor was that, like Black Sails, the characters started out as generally smart and competent, making reasonable decisions based on the information they had at the time…which leads to much more exciting conflicts than when someone is just freaking dumb, haha.

I’d say S6 starts rough (back half of S5 levels) but really finds its stride midway through.
There was a really rough stretch after they lost Glover, but I loved the second half of S6…and I love the cast enough that I’ll be able to enjoy the movie for what it is.
