As the parent of two teens, unfortunately this is true, and anyone over 24 is at a complete disadvantage in that arms race. Furthermore, I believe the resentful distance such (fruitless) surveillance attempts place between you and your child negates any gains from nuggets of alarming information a parent might glean.

What exactly did you feel compelled to explain to your 8 yo? I didn’t have to explain anything to my daughters, but they did have to explain (and demonstrate) the whip, the nae nae, and the dab to me. Winners all round.
