I think it worked the other way around. Businesses have been doing this for time out of mind (at least since the 1980s). I think modern sports owners learned it from the biz community.

This story uncovers two things everyone already knows: NOTHING can stop a Toyota truck and nurses are bad-ass and save lives. Still, it’s cool as hell.

The whole thing is despicable. Giving the poor basic necessities is “hand outs” and they should “pull themselves up by their own bootstraps,” but handing out billions to one of the wealthiest companies on Earth is good for the public? Fuck that. Got to love late stage capitalism!

I’m curious how much of this was learned from watching owners of sports teams hold cities hostage or they’d move the team somewhere more willing to foot the bill for new arenas and stadiums that the team owners would then get sweetheart deals so they get all of the profit with none of the expenditures.
