To be fair being distracted can definitely have a huge effect on pain (it's how hypnosis as anesthetic works IIRC). But I agree I'd like to see the Mythbusters episode on how easy it is to do in practice in that circumstance. (or, you know, not)

Contrasting a "hero-hero" to Tony Soprano and Walter White is one whopping false dichotomy. Neither Tony Soprano (from what I hear, I haven't watched that show) or Walter White are heroes, or even anti-heroes. They're protagonists but they're clearly villains. (Walter White at best starts out as an anti-villain, i.e.

Hey, you're welcome ^^
I should rewatch those myself, I keep forgetting what happened way back when. I watched some of season 3 a few months ago but I haven't watched season 1 since forever.

I can't really say anything to the quality of his whistling. It didn't shock me because it seemed to me he had whistled in such circumstances before but I might be misremembering, and can't give a specific example to back it up. I agree he's a good whistler, and whistling definitely improves with experience. But

Actually I think the $737,000 (or was it $747,000 ?) was in the second season already (because the number went into the title which went into the season-long plane crash teaser). At the start of the show he was probably looking for even less.

It isn't about the money, it's about the power that comes with it and that it symbolizes. He pretty much says it in that many words.
And Jesse has always been the one willing to take their winnings and get out each time there was a chance, and Walt has turned down golden opportunities to get out of the drug business

I think a lot of it is also that neither of those scenes were for the benefit of the audience, really, but for the characters. Walter's whistling was obvious, but then Jesse has such a strong faith in Walt (and Walt is so good at manipulating Jesse) that only something obvious and unplanned by Walt could shake it.

Walter's whistling signalled that he was quite happy that very moment (and I can't remember exactly but it seems to me the other times we've seen him whistle were times when he felt on top of the world). And why wouldn't he be ? He was cooking meth which he enjoyed, honest lab work getting good results as you say,
