I’m happy or sad for you but I’m not reading all of that. I’ll ungrey you for effort though.

I’m skeptical on Flo “stepping in to direct” any of the film. There are usually other units and backups for that sort of thing, no?

I don’t think Griner for an arms trafficker who will undoubtedly be deployed to help Russia cause even more carnage in Ukraine is an even or fair trade, but it doesn’t make her purpose for being in Russia less accurate.

I wrote about your point regarding support for the WNBA the other day on this site. You’re correct that no one goes to the games and if not for the NBA subsides the league would have folded 20 years ago. Hell, you can’t even get women to support the league with their dollars. Women’s sports need women’s support

I think it’s hilarious I’m supposed to feel bad for a WNBA player making $130K for playing ball. Meanwhile I work 40+ hours a week sitting down in my basement and make less than that.

The phrasing is that the *relative* amount is driving Griner’s choices: the sentence is literally she went to Russia because she earns so much less. It isn’t true.

Yeah, he is, but in this case, he’s not wrong. It really is a bad deal.

“Griner, meanwhile, was playing in Russia during the WNBA off-season because the league’s players earn so much less money than their male counterparts”

Spoiled is certainly not the word I would call her but I do think that it absolutely smacks of privilege that she is receiving such heavy lobbying for release when there are several thousand people in our jails for the exact same crime who are not going anywhere - which none of you seem to recognize. Nor do you want

Ironically, I think the WNBA is more likely to have sat her down and said something along the lines of “You’re clearly dealing with something, here are some resources we can offer you” because of PR.

It clearly pays to be a crappy man. Misogyny wins. Again.

Bey could have been a better supporter of a fellow black female artist and figured this out before she put our her album. Elvis did this to black musicians....

I get Kelis’ point. She wrote all her own music. She signed a bad contract with The Neptunes. She was in high school when she first began working with them. They knew she trusted them (youthful ignorance) and they used deception the swindle her out of her publishing. And now they're selling her artistry to the highest

The message is uplifting black women, but in practice it’s uplifting Beyonce (unless legally required to acknowledge someone else.)

So far this album seems to be pretty reliant on samples made famous by earlier black women, thus far without crediting them.

Yeah, however I am still torn here. Kelis’ voice is not in Beyonce’s track as far as I can hear, she has zero songwriting credits on the original track so is not necessarily owed any more than anyone else involved in making it, and there would have been many others. Also, I generally think Kelis seems pretty cool.

She has been a big proponent of social justice issues, particularly feminism.

Quoting bell hooks and Cornell West on this one...

So what we’re saying here is that Jezebel is moderating it’s normal stance of applying moral clarity and emotional force to an article because they are afraid a mob of angry midwits will go apeshit on them?

It’s amazing to watch Jezebel adopt a very NYT style journalism-ey tone when talking about this in the context of Beyonce (or her production team) being the villain when in almost any other context those paragraphs would be an invective laden rant at the person Kelis was talking about and would likely follow up with
