It’s still easier to replace her on the committee if she retires or dies than if she keeps clinging on. The Democrats have enough to worry about with Republicans, they don’t need their own contributing to the obstacles they’re already facing. 

No, they won’t be less obstructionist. But if she retires, or dies, the governor of California can simply appoint a replacement and Republicans can’t do anything about it. Whereas Republicans were able to obstruct when they were trying to get her off the committee while still remaining a Senator.

She totally can destroy her legacy. If she keeps this up much longer the only thing people will think of when her name comes up is how she screwed over the country by not retiring and preventing Democrats from appointing judges while they still had control of the Senate, and it absolutely will overshadow anything else…
