Well, the whole scene in the previous episode where Clara is the one who tells the young doctor that fear can be a superpower — I think that qualifies as pretty close. The Doctor doesn't end up as a male MPDG because he gets to have more of a personality than that — he has guilt, he has Big Questions to wrestle with,

The MPDG was a character whose sole purpose is to help a man self-actualize, and the characteristics that Nabin outlined are there with Clara I think. She's "quirky," she talks in ways that normal people don't, and acts jumpy all the time. In this case Clara functions that way for Pink, but she also has shades of it

OK 500 comments in, but whatevs…

I wondered about that myself. Watching this I wanted to say "Marcellus won't be happy…"

Aren't the North Vietnamese people Vietnamese people?

While it may not be policy at the AV Club (someone downthread said it isn't) let me chime in as a "media professional" — yes, a lot of news organizations have Fidel Castro, Abe Vigoda and George Bush the Elder, for instance, cued up already. I worked at a paper that had them alphabetically for people who were locally

All three accounts aren't mutually exclusive, given the way our memories play tricks on us after 30+ years. I could see some scenario where she tried to tell him and didn't get through (or there was some miscommunication between the two) and one or both people feel slighted.

Small nitpick, but something that bugs me whenever dinosaurs seem to appear on TV. T Rex and other carnosaurs were big, no doubt about it. But they had this one with a head that looked like it could hit Big Ben's lock face. That's just wrong — the thing would be about 30 feet tall or so, which is huge, but not

I didn't hate the movie. But I agree with Ms. Seide that some actors are better on the small screen than the big one. But I am not sure how much of that is a script that is essentially an extended TV episode, and directing choices to match. (The Troi drunk scene was manifestly not funny).

I always wondered if "Imagine" was dashed off in a few minutes of noodling, because that is what it sounds like. Not bad noodling, but something that could have done with a few more edits.

How about:
And take your baby by the ears
And play upon her darkest fears

I must agree with Modell, I can' stay mad at 80s New Order. Weirdly, I never listened closely enough to the lyrics of that particular tune to notice the klunky lyrics, which probably speaks ill of my listening skills since I have had that album for like 30 years in one format or another.

That was WTC 7, it was a 10-story or so building that was on the side of the Plaza (a few bankers offices were there and some Port Authority admins as well, it was a pretty ugly building). There was already a fire raging and 100,000 tons of steel had just rained down on the area. So yeah, structurally it was in no

Back when the AV Club reviewed Operation Filmmaker: "The whole film could be seen a metaphor for America's misadventures in Iraq:
Schreiber and company came in expecting flowers and sweets from a grateful
native, and wound up in a quagmire."

Yeah, well, "more palatable" is a bit of an understatement. The movie would have had a tougher time addressing two dead wives, one of whom might have been killed by Lewis himself (I'd guess he'd have been charge with manslaughter in any other jurisdiction).

Actually they'd say "Just because we can't explain it doesn't make it supernatural." Subtle difference, but an important one. Apropos of Insane Clown Posse, magnets really were once insanely mysterious. In fact it wasn't until Einstein's theory of Relativity was fleshed out that we knew the reasons electromagnets

With you on the high school party — every time I see one of these on TV or in a movie I think, "Fuck, I went to the wrong high school." And the crowd i was with was a bunch of hoodlums, comparatively.

I love that idea. Frankly that is the one thing about Wayne I don't get — what, he touches people? Gives them hugs? If I walke around saying "give me your pain" and hugging people would that suddenly make me really sexually attractive to young Asian women? (At least Sybock was doing some Vulcan mind-meld).

Chalk me up as someone who doesn't think @avclub-86bf4249c40be998048133f498828f5f:disqus has much to apologize for.
