They’re averse to using “female” as an adjective, so...
This is a really strange thing to worry about. It’s Ridley Scott and a movie set int he 1300's. The movie very obviously isn’t going to try and be a message for either way of thinking.
Every time I see the old “motto formatting” joke I think “What is dead may never die.”
I don’t get why they didn’t just say “male characters.”
if you wanted to be a little unfair and clickbait-y
It says something about the current state of the A.V. Club that when I saw the headline in my RSS feed, I assumed it was a typo for “main.”
At the risk of speaking in racist generalities, Dominicans are very attractive. So, that checks out
We’ll find out in the upcoming ‘Into the Gordon-Verse’ movie.
Right, right…
In the 60's show, which is the canonical first appearance of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, Barbara was a BRUNETTE. She tucked her hair under her Bat-hat, and had a fake ‘party in the back’ partial wig attached to the back to make it APPEAR she had red hair, as a way of throwing off anyone trying to suss out her identity.
Grace is Dominican (her original last name is Martinez), and her character in the movie is still Latina. Her father is played by Jimmy Smits!
As I noted in a prior post, despite the (understandable) controversy about In The Heights, the movie was a showcase for Grace as a possible Batgirl. Grace’s character has the warmth, intelligence and stubborn determination we’d want in Barbara Gordon. Even the dynamic between Grace and Jimmy Smits, playing her father…
I think the issue some people had with Grace’s casting in ItH is that she’s not Latina (in a role that they felt should go to someone of that ethnicity), not that she isn’t nonwhite.
That didn’t even occur to me. I really hope it doesn’t happen. Give me a Batgirl: Year One adaptation instead.
But.... but.... but.... she doesn’t have red hair!
Is this not related THE BATMAN, in which case she would be playing the daughter of Jeffrey Wright (Commission Gordon)? Because that’s not bad casting as far actors looking related go (yes, I know they are different ethnicities).
Of course KM is going to be a villain in Batgirl —- you think any studio is going to miss the opportunity for justified fire pyrotechnics?
I look forward to the debates about whether she counts as a non-white superhero, after that huge stink over the In the Heights casting.
