1986 Dodge d100/150 with a 3.7l V6 is combined 15mpg, 2016 dodge 1500 3.6l V6 20 mpg combined. 2016 3.0l TD is 24 mpg. It think we have come a long way on effiecency just looking at one maker. That isn’t looking at the V8 which was 11mpg in 1986...

for efficiency you don’t have to totally decompress the gas to reset the valve, also depending on size of the pistons surface area they may not need very high pressures to actuate the valves which allows them to increase reliability. Not sure if this ever makes it to mass production or not but it is interesting.
