The actual base story in Akira doesn't really involve Asian themes. Biker gangs, government experiments into psychic powers on children, and anti-government terrorism aren't emblematic of Japanese culture. Akira, as a story, is very easy to translate to any highly advanced metropolitan setting.

There is a perfection about animatronics that CG can't even get close to mimiking. I think this is why I still love the original SW trilogy, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, etc.
