They shouldn’t have been able to vote or serve as officers in the military for decades if not until after the turn of the century. The North should have occupied every major city in the Deep South and crushed their spirit over successive generations.

That is correct. The Confederates were traitors. You can’t fly the United States’ Flag with the Confederate flag and say you’re a patriot since the latter tried to destroy the former.
