@elwood: good point, how about a centrefugal clutch ? wouldn't that work if you found a way to actuate it
this might be a REALLY stupid idea, but i always wondered why turbos can't be disengaged.. maybe a tiny clutch on the axle connecting the compressor and turbine. this will increase efficiency when a turbo isn't needed, and yet oomph will be present when you need it.
