Better to wear the brakes than the clutch, IMO.  

It’s fine.  Less wear on the brakes.  Since the engine is running and oil is moving around you’re not causing any undue wear on the engine.  In my car the injectors shut off during engine braking so if I have a long time to decelerate I will let the car do the work.  Plus learning how to properly engine brake is a…
