The 4-door E36's usually have a plastic battery cover/ micro-parcel shelf protecting the battery. Maybe it wasn’t snapped in properly and/or was just straight up missing and then the WD-40 can did its thing.
My trunk and hood latches are sticky. I always have a can of WD-40 somewhere in the car.
The gas tank is under the rear seats in this car, not the trunk.
