I used to live a block from this bridge. The issue is that there's a cross street right before the bridge that delivery trucks have to frequently turn on to. If there was a normal hanging height bar it would get hit constantly by trucks who legitimately need to go that direction.

There are numerous warnings well in advance. I've seen them personally.
