A simpler and cheaper ship is needed - a frigate with ASW and ASuW as its primary role (towed sonar, CODLAG propulsion), with only a short to medium range AA capability, like the ESSM or the new RN Sea Ceptor system. There is no need to put Aegis on a ship like that.

The thing is, the US is happy to buy foreign stuff when & where it suits.
