Free speech is one of our rights. I was using an example.

Freedom of speech doesn’t work like that. This is what I’m talking about. The ignorance is painful.

No, sweetie. I’m arguing the for the rights of all people and encouraging everyone to pursue and protect their civil rights. If you’re going to name call, it needs to make sense.

That was kinda my point.

No, you are just devoid of any understanding of the law and civil rights. Plus, you are arguing for the same position as those on Fox News, though it’s about different people. Think about that for a second.

Except that her rights WERE violated for being arrested merely for pissing off a cop, rather than an actual crime. And she was detained - as an underage girl - for 18 hours in a hold facility with adult men for no actual reason. Yes, obviously it isn’t by any stretch of the imagination as bad as Freddie Gray or Kalief

Because she has the means and the privilege to sue, I would imagine. If she were just an outraged white girl telling people that the police were mean to her, then we might not hear about it (or we might, but it seems unlikely for this particular story). Instead, her mother (because yes, she is privileged as fuck) is

I thought that their point was that, because she can sue, she should. Like, her white privilege and her class-based privilege put her in a position where she can fight back against police misconduct, so she has an obligation to do that specifically because it’s so much worse for other people.

If the police are treating well connected, wealthy white girls like this, then how are they treating those with less social privilege? The point of the media campaign is to make the lawsuit feel like it’s just entitled people being entitled. As more details come out there may be more people who come forward and talk

People are judging her for standing up for the constitutional rights of her friends because she is pretty, white, and privileged. Should she just shut up like a good girl when police abuse their power BECAUSE she is pretty and white?

Saying because there are worse violations occuring, we should not print stories on lesser violations is silly.

Okay, yes? But it’s still not cool when the police throw their weight around to any extent. I’m not about to stop scratching my itchy feet because other people have chickenpox.

Who are these people on Jezebel who are outraged at this story but aren’t outraged at similar stories that happen to non-white people?

Who is saying she’s a hero? Sure she was drank underage (gasp!!) but as far as I can tell she was arrested for annoying the cops by telling her friends about their rights and probably giving them some sass. Anybody being arrested for this should piss everyone off. You don’t have to think she’s a hero to think that

Because as I said 99% of the time the issue is brought up by derailing MRAs on posts about women’s issues. I’ve had plenty of experience trying to engage with those commenters and getting nothing but “no but what I say is true” with little evidence or nuanced argument back; in fact I’m experiencing something similar

Actually you can have it both ways. You can consistently say that all problems should be addressed because police misconduct against anyone is wrong and also expect extra attention to be put into fixing the most grievous problems.

She “interfered” by saying that her friends don’t have to show their ID, as is their right. She wasn’t using the fake ID, so no, she wasn’t sanctioned for that. Just because she has an ally doesn’t mean that she shouldn’t take advantage of that and take the cops to task for their bullshittery.

No, no one is saying that. Once again, some things are worse than others but just because there are worse things doesn’t make it ok. Is that hard to understand? really?

Oh come off it. Yes this isn’t as bad as other things that have happened to many other people but it’s still wrong. You can’t have a line that says police misconduct isn’t bad if it’s against certain groups, even if that group is white private school kids. Police misconduct is wrong all the time. Yeah there are levels

Dismissing someone’s complaint about their civil rights being violated by the police based on their race and income? And making up excuses as to why the youth deserved the treatment they got? Fascinating...
