I wholeheartedly agree that Baldur's Gate II is one of the best RPGs of all time. It is, unfortunately, also the last great game that BioWare made.
The problem with Baldur's Gate - and the reason I've always recommended that people start with II - is that the D&D system isn't really all that expansive or fun until you get to level 6 or so, which takes *forever* in the first game (since you start at 1). You spend a lot of Baldur's Gate feeling like a weakling.
