yeah running is the most core of all of the sports, too. Almost every sport in the world revolves around running. To be the fastest in the world 3 straight Olympics is utterly insane. Compared to Track, Swimming is a niche sport.

like the robot said, you are really competing against yourself in these sports (nobody is running into your lane to slow you down) while the other ones you are competing directly with people.
