my 3G with 4.0 seems much faster actually - camera takes pictures much quicker, multitasking even works, although a little jumpy at times.

i think they used the new balls not because players like them, but because as you say, it adds randomness. nothing is worse then watching a 0-0 match. 2-2, 3-3, are much more entertaining.
