The Fit was a car that was made to replace the Civic, which it didn't. Its also the reason you can't find a Civichatchback anymore other than in Europe. Was it a surprise coming? No. Was it a surprise that it was actualy a good car? Compared to the car it was suppose to replace? No, not really.

How did the Viper surprise anyone? Everyone thought this car was going to be good even before it came out!
