Not everyone is so considerate with their vice. My mother chain-smoked in the apartment when I was a child (with windows closed in winter) even after she found out that I’m allergic and had lung problems. Wouldn’t even go outside.

I think lot of it has to do with the “American Dream” - the idea that if you work hard enough, you can make something from nothing. The idea that our success or failure are the direct results of our choices and actions - ours alone.

Yes! This! My family used to keep syrup in the fridge, so I remember being irritated being left in the cupboard all the time when we first got married. But yeah, like most things, she turned out to be right.
