There’s also the fact that the Academy already provides DVD screeners to its voting members. Why not? It’s certainly cheaper than having to rent out enough movie theaters for every movie for every member in however many cities/states/countries they may be in.

Did they buy distribution rights, or pay for a license to use this work? How does this pan out in a way where the copyright owners don’t just smack them and say ‘stop that’?

Fuck them anyways. They have been repeatedly accused of stealing tech from our companies here. That should be the main focal point. You should be barred from sales here for IP theft. It’s that simple.
