I want to trade my 40 year old rusty Jeep for something that just got dragged out of a swamp! What car should I buy?
Once again, the actual answer is Subaru. Get an outback or a forester. More room but still easy to park. All the off road capabilities you probably need since you didn’t say you needed anything more than the boxy shape of the jeep. Better gas mileage, better at being a daily driving vehicle, can confirm the outback…
Yes, seems like the kind of story Jalopnik would be in an even better position to report on.
So... are you guys going to announce this, or what?
It’s be super cool if there was an even hotter version of the new WRX, maybe painted blue with gold wheels referencing their past racing heritage.
I currently own a manual 2008 Honda Fit... and I’m guessing the Fit you drove was also a 1st gen model. If I drive it hard, I get about 33mpg. If I take it easy, I get around 38mpg. If I hypermile, I can get into the mid 40s.
Finally, I get to tell this story.
It’s got to be my old Unimog 404. It was a 6 speed with 2 reverse gears and required two shifters to accomplish it all. Instructions were in German. And aside from that it was a guessing game which gear you were in.
M35 deuce-and-a-half. Required double-clutching on every shift.
In 2015 I inherited a manual 1997 Chevy S10 with a V6, 4WD, no air conditioning, and manual roll-down windows. It was rusty and worn out and tired.

clutch heavy af, shifter mech is clunky. Add in a time machine conversion and your knuckles hit the time circuits. plus the seating position for long drives is not the greatest. Imagine sitting with your butt on your living room floor and your back against a couch.
In 2003, U-Haul messed up my reservation for a 20ft truck. They knew how to take the reservation, but not hold the reservation. Instead of the 20ft truck I reserved, I got a free “upgrade” to a 26 ft truck. From the 80s. With a manual. It was the only truck over 10ft available within 30 miles so I took it. The manual…
Base Yaris... circa... 2012? 13? Pre-Mazda infusion, at least. It did make the car better to drive, mind you (keep the revs up to manage DC traffic!), but the throw was similar to my Wrangler, it was just as vague, and if possible, even more rubbery.
The efficiency of the electrical system is quite a bit better than gasoline, but that weight advantage for gasoline is tough to beat. The weight would be more equal if the oxygen was also carried along with the gasoline and all the combustion products had to be kept in a container.
Hah! I’m ok with horrible rust on my Gambler cars (I mean, it’s unavoidable at a sub-$1,000 price point) but anything that I want to keep has to be somewhat clean.
