This is exactly right.  The reason Dahmer was able to go so long without being caught despite being very sloppy was that he was targeting gay men.  Much like women of color, sex workers, or substance addicted persons, gay men were (and in many cases, still are) often overlooked or outright ignored by authorities.

Bundy killed white girls, and those seem to be the only victims, the public gives a damn about.

Despite killing white women, Bundy also got away with it for a long time before capture and some of those women are still unidentified or only reasonably assumed to have been among his victims. Dahmer was also notable for the utter mess he had in his house - drums full of body parts, stuff everywhere - and the police actually walked through it and did not do/see anything but bring his escaped victim back for him to kill. Just to play devil’s advocate, the way around it is that clearly in human interactions we understand there is a difference between not hiring somebody because you don’t want a woman doing that job and not hiring somebody because you don’t want a homosexual to do that job.
