I had trouble with the Developer preview due to my mac already having a windows partition that I don't want overwritten with W8, it seemed to be a problem with Boot Camp. Is there another way to get the partition made? Also, how would you go about using the USB to install the OS?

There was definitely the point in time where it was used in "Dude Ranch," which predates many of the more modern theories.

What does it do about 3rd party apps? Does it just drain the color from anything you download from the app store?

I got my first Mac last year when the Macbook Pros got refreshed in March. Since then it's been great as a school/work computer in OS X, and a pretty decent gaming computer in Windows. I'm thoroughly pleased with my purchase.

I think something to consider very highly is your level of immersion. That's good to know. It's something that FFXI had that seemed to work well with the game. You can switch to your casual guild for a more chill playing experience, and back to your hardcore when you want to ramp it up.
