I think its important to temper this discussion with what can reasonably expected of strangers and how they perceive you. There are plenty of people who are sympathetic towards transgendered persons but simply don’t know the right, most delicate language to use when referring to a person. There also doesn’t seem to be…

That’s because the Root writers don’t like white people, cis, trans, or otherwise.

Trans* issues are a minefield. I hate being being asked about this as the token LGBT, because as a cis gay, I know literally nothing about trans issues and can’t really relate, and anything I say that’s “wrong” can and will be used against me in the court of public opinion.

So I am not a journalist, and I am still COMPLETELY unclear as to how to refer to trans or non binary people.
