It drives me crazy that NASA and more directly the US government want to ignore the Moon, a place humans have been to a few times, and want to jump right to Mars. Wouldn't it make more sense to build a Moon base and use that as a staging area to explore the rest of the solar system?

I am having a hard time trying to figure out why we should colonize Mars. Why would anyone want to live there?
