It was very low budget, shot on low quality digital film, which could explain your feelings. To me, I loved the making of the music. I've never seen that in a movie before or since, or felt that sincerity.

The only thing that bothers me in these first few episodes is the prolific nature of Rick's belch. Too much, too much. It seems to fade towards the end of the first series.
