I supported Bernie in the primary but I thought it was downright shameful how he continued his primary campaign well past viability just to appease his rabid supporters. For some reason I just can’t bring myself to subscribe to that idea. I know it’s supposed to be pretty great with little downside but it seems to make voting easier without actually making it more accessible.

From everything I’ve read on the subject, a straight popular vote would make basically the West Coast and the Northeast the campaign regions. There would be little or no reason for a politician to even court the rancher in Montana’s vote at all.

Proportional apportionment seems to make the most sense if the goal is to repair the system, though I still find persuasive the argument that certain sparsely-populated states would still be given too much power in the electoral college system, even with proportional apportionment.

Strategically, right now nothing matters more than state legislatures that will determine voting districts after the 2020 census. The number and makeup of seats available in 2018 literally gives democrats almost no additional power over what we have now.
