If I’m not mistaken, it is the only college campus with a library.

I’m not 100% sure I buy this. You have accurately described the nature of the job, and sure, we all become desensitized to some of the shittier aspects of our jobs that we are exposed to. But we are talking about molesting children. That is, or should be, always shocking to someone unless your work environment has you…
Then why go through the protracted embarrassment of this civil trial?
I mean, okay, sure, that’s a nice thought. But that doesn’t explain (a) why they reached confidential settlements with the victims, (b) why they initially had these records sealed and (c) why they are hiding as much as possible from behind the limitations in Pennsylvania’s public records laws.
I can see this.
Ummm....all this does is make it more and more difficult for PSU truthers to continue buying the bullshit. If this stuff never comes out, they can continue feeding the lie that (a) Paterno did what he was legally required to do, so he can’t be villified and (b) that this was an anamolous bad actor, not an indication…
Perhaps, but then I wonder why even settle with the victims?
Nah. No one who has ever dealt with an insurance company would ever think they would “quietly pay.” Insurance companies fight every claim they can.
Then why even pay settlements? Why not fight those in court as well?
Is this a serious comment?
Insurers wouldn’t make a whole lot of money if they just allowed their clients to rack up damages and then make claims. Liability insurance policies will always have a provision requiring that the insured notify the insurer when they become aware of a possible claim that could trigger coverage. That way the insurer…
There was a 1988 incident that was referred to the AD.
Uhhh...they did. That’s what makes this lawsuit so baffling. They paid off the victims to make it go away. Then they turned around and demanded coverage from their insurance company, which the company denied, leading to this lawsuit, all but ensuring that these records would eventually become public.
I’m not asking why they are pursuing this lawsuit despite the damage it could do to Paterno’s reputation, I am asking why they are pursuing this lawsuit despite the damage it could do to their own reputation. It paints the picture of a program and athletic department that willfully employed and enabled a child…
I mean, if they pursued this lawsuit, knowing that discovery would reveal damaging information based on keeping the records sealed, they are idiots. Of course the records would be initially sealed, and I’m sure the insurance company consented to sealing, which in an ordinary case would ensure that the records would…
“Double-down on distraction with “yeah but look at the GOOD he did.””
Boy oh boy.
I’m always told what a terribly difficult job police have, what horrifying things they see every day. I’ve always believed it. Shouldn’t they, then, have thicker skin than being offended by a mild, muted criticism of police violence in general (not a criticism of these officers in particular, or even their department)…
“Ironically, the full-scale marketing blitz that Orlando used to attract Hill and McGrady overwhelmed Duncan and helped convince him to pick a situation where he felt more comfortable.”
Yeah, I know you can’t really buy the NFL or MLB, but the point is that’s the more apt comparison to buying the entire UFC.
